| Background: | California Sen. Gloria Romero, D-Los Angeles and chair of the Senate Education Committee, will give opening remarks. Robert Klein, chairman of the committee that oversees the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, or CIRM, will be the keynote speaker. Frank LaFerla, director of UCI's Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders, or UCI MIND, and colleague Malcolm Dick will participate in the panel discussion, moderated by Hans Keirstead, co-director of the stem cell center. The center and UCI MIND are organizing the event. Previous Patient, Physician, Scientist topics have included age-related blindness, Huntington's disease and Parkinson's disease. Public interest in the series has led to philanthropic support that helped UCI obtain $27.2 million from CIRM to build Sue & Bill Gross Hall: A CIRM Institute. Expected to open in July 2010, it will be one of 12 such facilities in California dedicated to basic and clinical stem cell research. |
