Background:A diverse group of UCI students from Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Druze and nonreligious backgrounds founded the Olive Tree Initiative in 2007 with help from the School of Social Sciences' Center for Citizen Peacebuilding. The students wanted a forum in which to discuss and learn about different perspectives on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In fall of 2008, OTI students and faculty members made the first two-week trip to the region, where they met with academics, politicians, religious authorities, community leaders and activists. In April 2009, they held a three-day UC Student Leadership Summit that resulted in other UC campuses adopting the Olive Tree Initiative.
